Think of pheromones as secret, smelly (but to us, odorless!) messages that dogs send to each other. Only dogs can "smell" and understand these messages, which are like a special dog language.
Dogs have tiny glands on their skin that make these messages, and different parts of their body send different messages that can affect how another dog feels or acts. All dogs, from puppies to oldies, just get these messages.
They have a specialarea in the roof of their mouth called the vomeronasal organ that picks up these messages. Sometimes you might see your dog doing a funny lip-licking or teeth-chattering thing – that's them trying to get a better "whiff" of these secret messages.
